Family

This page is genealogical, if you are interested in my immediate family see Biographic.

My brother, Bob (standing first on left), has collected the information presented here.
I am fourth face in back row. Dolores is second woman from left. Carmen is last kneeling at right.

Jerry and Judy's daughters, Stephanie and Cortney are not present. Nor is my son, Jeff.

I have four brothers, two sisters, and the requisite Mom and Dad.
They are all in this picture from 1992. We have all been together only once since then.

I am of the ninth generation of descendants of Jeremiah Ellis in the United States of America. Jeremiah arrived in Boston from England sometime prior to 1724. There are some mysteries about how, and whether or not, he was related to other Ellis family already in Boston.

My generation includes thirty-two descendants of Horton Hunt Ellis and Cora Belle Kisor, great-grandson of John Ellis and Rhoda Rathbone. These thirty-two are the persons in the descent that I have met. Horton Hunt Ellis was my grandfather's father. He died before I was born. The "descent" looks like this:

Family Tree just a red ruler
  • Jeremiah Ellis and Judith Ayers
    • Gideon Ellis and Jemina Austin
      • John Ellis and Rhoda Rathbone (1)
        • Ira Ellis and Sarah Israel
        • also, Nancy Ellis (2)
          • John R. Ellis and Kate Boice
            • Horton Hunt Ellis and Cora Belle Kisor
              • Charles Riley Ellis (my grandfather) and P. Arlean Lewis
              • Jennie Kathine Ellis (my grandfather's sister whom I knew well, a namesake of Jennie McGraw, no children)
                • Gerald Robert Ellis (two brothers and a sister, not shown here) and Grace Mary Allard (thirteen siblings, now shown here)
                  • Then me, of course, Donald D. Ellis and Dolores Higareda
                    • Then Jeffrey Douglas Ellis, our favorite son
                    • and, Carmen Marie Ellis, our favorite daughter

There are several Ellis namesakes in the region. Notably, Ellis Hollow where Peleg Ellis, one of my grandfathers, was the first settler. Then, of course, Ellis Hollow Road, Ellis Hollow Creek Road, and the Ellis Cemetery. At one time the cluster of houses at the east end of Ellis Hollow was known as Ellis and had its own post office.

Some of those folks made a splash locally, John Ellis (1) and Nancy Ellis (2)

Local Notes just a red ruler

John Ellis (1)
Known whimsically in his time as the King of Dryden. His home town was Dryden New York. John was very active in commerce and in politics. He was elected to the New York State Assembly, was one of four first judges elected to the new Town of Ulysses court. Ulysses then incorporated all of what today is Tompkins County, New York. He held many other offices, often simultaneously. He served as a Captain leading a company on the Niagara Frontier in the War of 1812. He dealt in real estate on a fairly large scale.

I live near Cornell University and my employer, Spider Graphics Corporation, does much work for the myriad divisions of the University. So, my family connection to Cornell University is interesting to me and present on a daily basis.

Nancy Ellis (2)
Nancy married John Southworth and gave a daughter, Rhoda Charlotte Southworth who married John McGraw. Their daughter Jennie McGraw gave Cornell University the clarion in the McGraw bell tower. I see the tower nearly every day, as do many people in this community.

Descendants of Gerald Robert Ellis and Grace Mary Allard, my parents

  • Gerald Miles Ellis, 1945
  • Donald Douglas Ellis, 1946
  • Robert James Ellis, 1947
  • Darlene Grace Ellis, 1950
  • Edward Bradley Ellis, 1952
  • Teresa Gail Ellis, 1954
  • Paul Charles Ellis, 1956

Gerald R. Ellis died of Parkinson's Decease in January 2004.
Grace M. Ellis died in May 2004 of complications from chemotherapy in the 1960s

At this moment, April 2004, the two youngest of my siblings both have grandchildren. This, of course, implies they also have children - six of us do have children. There are sixteen children of my generation, one deceased.

Remaining in Tompkins County

I am the remaining Ellis in the line of Horton Hunt Ellis living in Tompkins County, New York, the family base for 21 decades. Many other Ellises from further up the line also remain here.

One of the Ellis places of note in Tompkins County is Ellis Hollow, founded by Peleg Ellis from whom I am directly descended. In Ellis Hollow there is the Ellis Cemetary where many of the Ellises in the listing above are buried.
