Texas is Straight Ahead

Stop -
in awe at three AM,
one hundred miles from Denver,
two hours from sunrise.

Park -
cross over to farmland,
wish it was just prairre,
go straight out from headlights.

Walk -
softly under endless stars,
south and south
until no truck intrudes.

Sit -
in darkness.
Touch the star dome.
Feel Rockies swelling to the right.

Know -
the Missouri slides to St. Louis.
Texas is straight ahead.
Dakotas not far behind.
