Spider Graphics Corporation
During 1993 I began to discover the Internet was more than the CompuServe service I had been using for several years. I saw Mosaic - web graphics - it was clearly a technology with a future. I introduced it to a course I was teaching at Ithaca College.
By mid-1994 I knew it was my future - that I would launch a new venture within this technology and would live within it for a long time.
Having lived the loneliness of launching companies alone, I decided in this case to not go ahead without four other loonie adults who would venture with me. Given that I live in the greater-Ithaca, New York community it took only two weeks to find those loonies. Five of us launched the new company on January 2, 1995.
Spider's logo has always been a spider. The first one was designed by Wendy Fuller, a founder. The second by me, and the last by Gordon Holloway, an employee and now sometimes design consultant.
Spider Graphics Corporation is a substantial regional success. The staff has varied in number from five to ten. Workers become owners after a few years. We go to work for the challenge of it.
Spider Graphics Corporation, or simply, "Spider" as most now refer to it, has its studio and office in Cayuga Heights. It is right next to Cornell University, Spider's largest single client. The workers are frequently referred to as spiders.
I enjoy those occasions when someone asks why we named it Spider Graphics. My standard answer is, "It's the web." Over the years clients, friends, and family have given me many spiders, spider jewelry, spider pictures, and spiders to hang on the walls and ceiling.
Spider Graphics Corporation, or simply, "Spider" as most now refer to it, has its studio and office on Danby Road in the old NCR factory. This 2006 location is refreshingly industrial, very scenic, and a great stability for a company that needs to concentrate of growth.
